The steady increase in the volume of sludge generated by water treatment as a result of population growth and urban development is an increasingly pressing issue for local authorities. There are several methods for sewage sludge treatment, reduction and recovery.

Stormwater and the water used by some 9 million people in the Greater Paris Region transits through the SIAAP (the sanitation board for the Paris region) underground pipe network and is then "washed" for domestic and industrial uses. After treatment in one of the six SIAAP wastewater treatment plants, the water is discharged into the Seine and the Marne.
Sludge is incinerated in the SIAAP Colombes treatment plant, which generates residual fumes that require treatment. The fumes are cooled in two graphite heat exchangers and then washed in a column. Replacement of a fume treatment line by Mersen
The fume treatment line is confined in a very cramped area of the plant, which eliminated the possibility of delivering the two heat exchangers pre-assembled.
The components were manufactured in Mersen's plant at Pagny-sur-Moselle and then delivered to the client.
MERSEN'S TEAMS EXPERTISE
Graphite tubes and tube sheets were assembled on site by the after-sales team. All of the technicians' ingenuity—and skill as contortionists— were in evidence as they installed one of the heat exchangers, which is 3.8 m long, 1.5 m wide, 3 m high and weighs 7.5 metric tons, in such a confined space. Their task was facilitated by the custom tools and solutions developed by Mersen's Engineering and Design department for handling and assembly. It took 11 weeks on-site to assemble, install and commission the heat exchangers. The level of service and efficiency was greatly appreciated by the client!
